Feeding Therapy

At Sensational Steps, our feeding specialists can either be speech therapists or occupational therapists. While each therapist may have their own particular areas of expertise, we all heavily utilize the SOS Approach to Feeding. This beautiful approach focuses on increasing a child’s comfort level by exploring and learning about the different properties of food. The program allows a child to interact with food in a playful, non-stressful way.

We are also fortunate to have a couple of specialized therapists that use oral motor and myofunctional therapy approaches to support feeding and swallow. Oral Motor Therapy can also be used to treat speech clarity differences, open mouth posture/breathing, drooling, as well as tongue & lip ties (pre and post release).

We primarily serve children who are: "picky eaters", g-tube dependent, demonstrating difficulty transitioning from bottle to solids, and have chewing and swallowing challenges.

SOS Approach to Feeding

Feeding therapy helps children develop normal, effective feeding patterns and behaviors. The SOS Approach to Feeding promotes a healthy and enjoyable lifelong relationship with food. It also supports sensory regulation through movement opportunities, helping to promote increased body awareness, attention, and participation during feeding.

Oral Motor / Myofunctional Therapy

Our feeding specialists can support the development of oral-motor skills necessary for efficient feeding and swallowing: including lip seal for back swallow, chewing skills, tongue lateralization, and jaw strength.

Oral Motor Therapy can also be used for children that come to us with speech clarity differences, open mouth posture/breathing, drooling, and tethered oral tissues.
